Well it was until Storm Katie blew through at the weekend. The long awaited spring is upon us. The clocks have gone forward and the evenings are finally lighter. For some of us we are now able to go to work or school and come home again in daylight.
For me, the outside has a whole new look when you are no longer in the dark, but what to do with the extra light??? Getting outside into the fresh air is such a wonderful feeling and although it can still be a little chilly, I still love to be outside listening to the birds, looking at the buds on the trees and generally enjoying the sunshine on my face.
Some of us may have over indulged at the weekend with the odd chocolate egg or two, but why not work it off either inside of out. Take the dog for a longer walk in the evening, do some tidying in the garden, which has taken a battering over the winter months. Meet up with some friends and go for a power walk taking in all the nature around you. Even if you can’t get outside, take the opportunity to spring clean the house:
Dusting ceilings (stretching and reaching)
Dusting skirting boards (squating)
Vacuum under and behind furniture (squat and push/lift)
Cleaning windows (cardio and reaching)
Taking stuff upstairs one thing at a time (stair climbing - cardio)
It is time to rid yourself of those extra winter layers and enjoy the spring time around us.
There are many activities that we can do in our daily lives that can be as good as a gym workout, however you get to enjoy the fruits of your labour when you sit back and enjoy the garden, spring cleaned house, or new friends you have made whilst walking.
Even if you are only moving slowly, you will be doing far more than all of those people still camped on their sofas watching TV.
Science has never drummed up quite as effective a tranquilising agent as a sunny spring day.
