I was watching a program about salmon the other day and it started me thinking about how we, as humans could compare ourselves to the salmon. How could that lovely fish help us in our lives and not just by being a great source of Omega 3s?
Salmon live most of their lives out at sea, then at some point they make a long and dangerous journey up river to spawn. They swim against the current, jump up waterfalls and over rocks. Often swimming past dozens of grizzly bears looking for their next feast, just for the opportunity to create life. This can often be the last thing that they will do in their lives but they will always do it.
Salmon will swim against the current, not going with the flow. They will overcome challenges and danger. They cannot stop because they are tired, they will not succeed in their task. They do not take the easy option and head back to the ocean. They are living their lives.
Can we always say the same about ourselves? Do we always make the harder choice? How easy is it to say I am too tired, too achy, too old to do that? I want to stay where I am, comfortable! I am going to go with the flow.
How many people reaching the end of their lives look back with regret of things they have down. Or do they look back and say, “I wish I had….”
I often hear people say “I am getting to old to do that”, “I am too achy to do that today, lets leave it until tomorrow”. “That seems impossible to me, let someone else try”.
Can we be guilty of saying these things?
Do you feel that there is something more out there waiting for you?
Is there something you have always wanted to do, but just never got round to it?
Think back to that salmon. Are you swimming up stream, living your life, or are you floating downstream, letting the current take you wherever it is going? Are we really living if we allow ourselves to settle with what comes along, sinking in the currents of the world we live in or are we going to learn to swim up the river, get over the waterfall and jump those rocks?
We are complex beings, made to live, create, move and be strong. We can do it.
My challenge to you this week is to do one thing you have been wanting to do and haven’t. Take control and go do it! Felt too tired to exercise – go for a walk. Need inspiration, give me a call.
