Eat Fat - Don't Eat Fat!


Well this week we were told to eat fat its good for you!

......no stop! don't eat fat its bad for you......hang on .... eat some fat as long as not saturated ...OK now I know.....no wait don't eat saturated fat, you should have low fat and vegetable fat......anyone else confused???????

Due to the nature of my job I try to keep up to date on current eating guidelines but this is becoming increasingly hard to do. Only this week there were two qualified experts on the BBC Breakfast News sofa, disagreeing on which fat we should eat and how much of it. If the experts can't agree, what hope is there us?

I am not a qualified nutritionist, however I have completed basic nutrition courses for exercise, weight loss and pregnancy. I also have a great interest in food, mainly due to the fact I really love it, but also because the more I learn, the more I understand that what you put in your body can and will affect your health, how you exercise, your skin and basically your day to day living.

In one day in the media you can be told to eat more fat, less carbs, more carbs, less fat. Who do you believe?

I don't have the answer to this, the only conclusion I can draw from what have learnt, is that if you eat a balanced diet, including plenty of fresh fruit & vegetables, eat as little processed food as possible (if it is processed then look at the label and understand what is actually in it), eat some carbohydrates & protein and small amounts of fat, you can’t go too far wrong.

There are some of us out there that do have food allergies and intolerances that will need to follow strict guidelines about what to eat, but for me, I am going to focus on eating and living a healthy balanced lifestyle:

Eating fruits, vegetables, healthy proteins, good fats, whole food carbohydrates like potatoes, rice and oats, fish or fish oils

Making sure that are a variety of colours and mixes of foods - thinking rainbow on a plate

Watching portion sizes and not overeating

Exercising regularly (outside where possible for me!)

Reducing as much stress in my life as possible

With the summer coming up, I am certainly going to take advantage of as much local fruit and vegetables as I can and will stop reading all of the hype in the media.
