How often do you feel under pressure? Pressure to get things done. Pressure to be on time. Pressure to achieve.
Who is it that creates that pressure? Is it your boss, your kids, your partner, or 9 times out of 10 is it you? Giving yourself unrealistic deadlines to get things done.
I have read numerous articles about time management, people who get up at 4.30am to do the housework before working out, taking kids to school and holding down a full time job and I applaud them. I then think if they can do it, why can't I, so I make that list of jobs to do with an expectation that they will be completed by the end of the day, only to get to bed that night and realise I have only done 3 of those things and left 10 still to do. Rather than celebrate the things I complete, I then beat myself up about the things I didn't do.
I realised this morning after meeting up for impromptu coffee with old friends I hadn't seen in a very long time, that life is not a list of jobs. Instead of thinking of all the things I should of been doing, I sat reminiscing over the good old days, having a laugh and a good catch up and I got home feeling energised and ready to get on with the rest of the day.
Sometimes we spend too much time and energy beating ourselves up about all of the negative things in our lives instead of celebrating all of the positives.
So, I didn't get my 60 minute workout done today, but I did 10 full on minutes, got my heart rate up and felt great for it.
The floor may not have been vacuumed for 3 days, but no one is losing a limb over it.
Anyone that follows may blog, may or may not have noticed there hasn't been one for 3 weeks. Everyday I have been getting on at myself, that I must get it done and I realised that something I was enjoying doing had become another 'to-do' chore on my ever extending list. How many things in your life have ended up that way?
There are many gurus out there that talk to us about making lists, being organised and focussed, working hard to reap the rewards later and investing your time now for the future. I applaud all of them but I have realised that it shouldn't be to the detriment of enjoying life. Without wanting to get morbid now, life is short and we can't get back the time we have wasted stressing and beating ourselves up about the things we haven't done. Let's focus our time on looking for the positives in everything we do. Just this afternoon I have been more productive than I have all week!
